Ardvi Monastery: A Sanctuary of History and Serenity

Ardvi Monastery, or St. Hovhannes Monastery, is a significant religious and historical site located in the village of Ardvi in the Lori region of Armenia. The monastery's history spans from the 8th to the 17th centuries, with various additions and reconstructions over time. It is also known as Srbanes Monastery, named in honor of St. Hovhannes Odznetsi (Hovhannes the Wise), a prominent theologian and reformer who was canonized by the Armenian Apostolic Church. The monastery complex comprises two small churches, single-nave vaulted halls connected by a common longitudinal wall, a belfry, and monastic buildings, all enclosed by a low-rise wall. Visitors can admire khachkars (cross-stones), a tetrahedral monument, and the ruins of residential and utility structures. The tomb of St. Hovhannes Odznetsi is located in front of the northern church. The monastery also gained recognition as a filming location for Sergei Parajanov's renowned movie 'The Color of Pomegranates'.
