Lake Arpi: Armenia's High-Altitude Wetland Jewel

Lake Arpi, located on the Ashotsk plateau in Armenia's Shirak Province, is a captivating destination for nature enthusiasts. Situated at an altitude of 2,025 meters, this lake and reservoir is the source of the Akhurian River and plays a vital role in the region's ecology.Originally a smaller lake formed by a volcano tectonic earthquake, Lake Arpi was transformed into a reservoir between 1946 and 1950 with the construction of the Arpi Dam. This expansion increased its surface area and volume, making it the second-largest water basin in Armenia after Lake Sevan. Today, it covers 20 square kilometers and has an average depth of 4.2 meters.Lake Arpi's significance extends beyond its size. Designated as a Ramsar site in 1993, it is a crucial wetland ecosystem that supports a diverse array of flora and fauna. In 2009, the area was established as Lake Arpi National Park to further protect its unique biodiversity. The park is home to over 140 species of birds, including the world's largest colony of Armenian gulls and Armenia's only nesting site for Dalmatian pelicans.Visitors to Lake Arpi can enjoy hiking along the various trails, offering stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
