Currency and Payment
Armenia’s currency is the dram (AMD). Cards and contactless payments are most dependable in Yerevan, Gyumri and larger formal businesses, while small rural shops, guesthouses and informal services may require cash. History of Arpi Lake

A Volcanic Highland Basin

Arpi Lake belongs to the volcanic upland landscape of north-western Armenia, where high plateaux, lava-derived terrain and broad mountain basins shape the scenery. Its setting is part of the wider Javakhk-related highland environment extending across the Armenian-Georgian borderlands. The natural basin, cold climate and seasonal water regime created conditions favourable to wetland habitats, pasture and rural settlement, although the modern lake is also strongly influenced by engineering and water management.

A Lake Shaped by Water Management

The present form of Arpi Lake is linked to a mid-twentieth-century impoundment that enlarged the natural water body for irrigation and water storage. This transformation altered the shoreline and seasonal flooding patterns, while retaining the wetland qualities that made the area valuable for birds and other wildlife. Water from the lake contributes to the Akhuryan river system, connecting this remote highland landscape with agricultural areas farther south in Shirak.

Borderland Communities and Pastoral Life

The lake’s surrounding country has long been used by rural communities for livestock rearing and agriculture adapted to a short growing season.
