Discover more about Kecharis Monastery

Kecharis Monastery, located in the popular resort town of Tsaghkadzor, is a captivating journey into Armenia's medieval past. Founded in the 11th century by the Pahlavuni dynasty, the complex evolved into a major religious and cultural center, complete with its own school. The monastery is located on the slope of the Pambak Ridge. The monastery complex includes four churches: St. Gregory the Illuminator, St. Nshan, Katoghike, and St. Harutyun (Holy Resurrection). The main temple, the Church of St. Gregory, was erected in 1003 by Grigor Magistros Pahlavuni and is a domed hall-type structure. The Church of Surb Nshan, south of St. Gregory, features a cross-in-square design. Katoghike Church, commissioned by Prince Vasak Khakhbakyan, showcases a cross-in-square layout with two-story chapels. Separated from the main buildings, the Church of the Holy Resurrection served as a burial place for the monastery's abbots. Unique medieval khachkars and tombstones are scattered throughout the grounds. Although the complex was destroyed in the 13th century by Mongol-Tatars, it was restored later that century. Restoration work continued into the modern era, with significant efforts in the 20th and 21st centuries. Today, Kecharis Monastery stands as a testament to Armenia's enduring architectural and religious traditions, offering visitors a serene and historically rich experience.
