Discover more about Kirants Monastery

Kirants Monastery, located approximately 12 km west of Kirants village in the Tavush region, is a remarkable example of Armenian medieval architecture. Constructed in the 13th century, the monastery distinguishes itself with its brick construction, a rarity among Armenian religious structures. This unique feature, along with its architectural design and artistic decorations, sets it apart as an exceptional monument. The monastery complex comprises three churches, hall-narthexes, a refectory, and residential and economic buildings, all enclosed within fortified walls. The main church features a rectangular domed hall, adorned with glazed tiles and frescoes with inscriptions in Georgian and Greek, reflecting the monastery's historical ties to Armenian Chalcedonians. The interior walls were plastered with lime mortar and decorated with frescoes. Legend says that the monastery's name, derived from 'kir' (mortar), originates from a stonemason apprentice who built the monastery. Upon completion, his master, out of envy, criticized the work, saying the mortar seeped through, hence 'Kirants'. The monastery's location, deep within the forest, adds to its mystique and appeal.
