Lori Castle: A Medieval Armenian Stronghold

Lori Castle, or Lori Berd, is a striking medieval fortress nestled between the Dzoraget and Urut rivers, close to the town of Stepanavan. Established in the early 11th century by David Anhoghin, it became the capital of the Kingdom of Tashir-Dzoraget and a vital point along northern trade routes. Strategically positioned on a rocky plateau almost 1500 meters above sea level, the fortress was a significant military and administrative hub. Its walls, stretching 214 meters, featured round and square towers, while a moat offered further protection. Inside, a palace, baths, chapels, and private apartments once thrived, supported by an underground passage to the Miskhana River for water access and external communication. Throughout its history, Lori Castle witnessed numerous power shifts, including control by the Seljuks, Georgians, Mongols, Turks, and Persians. Excavations have unearthed tools, pottery, and coins, revealing its role as a crossroads of international trade. Today, visitors can explore the ruins, admire the architectural remnants, and appreciate the panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. The nearby Lori Castle Bridge, a fine example of medieval Armenian bridgework, is also worth a visit.
