Sevanavank Monastery, located on the peninsula of Lake Sevan, is one of Armenia's most recognizable historical and cultural monuments. The monastery's location is truly captivating, offering panoramic views of the azure lake. The Sevan Peninsula, once an island, has been settled since the Bronze Age. Founded in 305 AD by Gregory the Illuminator, the monastery was built on the site of a former pagan temple. In 874 AD, Princess Mariam, daughter of King Ashot I Bagratuni, ordered the construction of two churches: Surp Arakelots (Holy Apostles) and Surp Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God). These churches, built from dark tuff and basalt, stand as testaments to medieval Armenian architecture. Over the centuries, Sevanavank played a significant role in Armenian history. It served as a stronghold for King Ashot before a battle with Arab armies. The monastery was also home to one of Armenia's oldest Matenadarans, where precious manuscripts were collected and preserved. Today, the churches of St. Karapet and the Holy Apostles are active and attract believers from around the world.
