    Discover more about Halidzor

Halidzor Fortress, also known as the Hermitage of Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), is a compelling historical site in Armenia's Syunik region. Originally a 17th-century monastic settlement, it transformed into a crucial military fortress under Davit Bek in the 18th century. The fortress is located approximately 14 km southeast of Kapan city. Strategically positioned on a hill on the right bank of the Voghji River, the fortress offered natural defenses. Its origins trace back to a donation by Princess Amazaspuhi to the Tatev Monastery in the 10th century, which controlled the site until the 14th century. The Melik-Parsadanyan family, prominent in the Kapan area, later acquired it. Halidzor's fame soared when it became Davit Bek's headquarters, serving as a vital center for Armenian resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 1720s. The fortress is enclosed by quadrangular stone walls and defensive towers. Inside, visitors can explore the ruins of the Church of Saint Astvatsatsin, monastic quarters, and a secret tunnel that once provided access to the river. Legends speak of the bravery of the 300 defenders who, along with bishops and priests, withstood a 70,000-strong Ottoman army for seven days. Today, Halidzor Fortress stands as a symbol of resilience and national pride for the people of Syunik. It serves as a reminder of Armenia's long struggle for liberation and the courage of those who defended their homeland.
