Discover more about Old Khot

Old Khot, also known as Hin Khot, is a captivating abandoned village in the Syunik region of Armenia. Often called the 'Armenian Machu Picchu', it's perched dramatically on the cliffs of the Vorotan River, approximately 1500 meters above sea level. The village's history stretches back to the 2nd century BC, with evidence suggesting early inhabitants dwelled in caves before constructing homes from the volcanic tuff rock. The village is first mentioned in historical chronicles dating back to the 5th century, when Prince Babik of Syunyats gifted Khot to the Persian General Gori upon his conversion to Christianity. Old Khot was once a taxpayer to the Tatev Monastery, and in 1205 Prince Dlen officially passed the village to the monastery. The remains of the 12th-century Red Church, known for its powerful bells, can still be found in one of the cemeteries. Another significant religious site is the Mrgadzori Khach church, believed to have been built in the 17th century by an Armenian woman who escaped a Persian harem. Social and economic changes in the 20th century led to the village's abandonment. Instead of investing in infrastructure, authorities relocated residents to a new settlement on flatter land closer to modern utilities. By the 1970s, the inhabitants had moved to the present-day village of Khot, leaving behind a remarkably preserved ghost town. Today, visitors can explore Old Khot's ruins, wander through the ancient paths, and admire the unique architecture that blends seamlessly with the natural landscape.
