Discover more about Monument

Artik, located in the Shirak Province of Armenia, is a town steeped in history and known for its rich collection of cultural monuments. This area has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the discovery of tombs dating back to the 14th-9th centuries BC. These tombs contained various artifacts, including clay pots, bronze daggers and necklaces, providing valuable insights into the lives of the ancient population of the Aragats region. Artik's cultural significance is further highlighted by its well-preserved churches. The small church of Marine, also known as St. Astvatzatzin (Holy Virgin), is believed to have been built in the 5th century. This unique building is considered one of the first domed churches and features three altars on its eastern side, with remnants of frescoes above the northeastern altar. The large church of St. Gevorg, dating back to the 7th century, showcases architectural elements characteristic of that era. While some of Artik's historical dwellings and mills are now in ruins, they still demonstrate the architectural prowess of the past. Despite the passage of time and some damage, the remaining structures offer a glimpse into the beauty and grandeur of these ancient architectural treasures.
