Discover more about Aghavnavank Monastery

Aghavnavank Monastery, also known as Surb Astvatsatsin Anapat (Hermitage of the Holy Mother of God), is a captivating monastic complex dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Located within the lush Dilijan National Park in the Tavush Province of Armenia, this sanctuary offers visitors a unique blend of historical intrigue and natural beauty. Also referred to as Aghnabat, the monastery is situated near the village of Aghavnavank, nestled in the heart of a yew grove. The name Aghavnavank translates to "Swallow Monastery". The complex was established by the Armenian Apostolic Church during a period of monastic expansion in medieval Armenia. The monastery features a small, central-domed church constructed with yellowish pumice stone. Architectural details include twin vestries, supporting arches, and a conical roof. While time has weathered the structure, the remaining carvings and inscriptions offer glimpses into its rich history. The grounds also contain remnants of monastic cells and auxiliary buildings. Surrounded by dense woodlands and ancient yew trees, some estimated to be 300-400 years old, Aghavnavank provides a peaceful atmosphere for reflection and exploration. Hiking trails connect the monastery to the nearby village, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural environment of the Tavush Province.
