Caucasian Red Deer Breeding Center

The Caucasian Red Deer Breeding Center, situated within Dilijan National Park, plays a vital role in the reintroduction of the Caucasian red deer to Armenia. The species was once widespread in the region but disappeared due to habitat loss and hunting. Since 2013, the International Wildlife Fund has been working to restore the population, with the center serving as a crucial part of this effort. The center provides a protected environment for the deer to breed. Deer born at the center are eventually released into the wild. The project has transformed the area into a tourist hotspot, with tens of thousands of visitors each year. Visitors can observe the deer, learn about the reintroduction program, and even feed the animals with food provided by the center's staff. While the reintroduction program has been largely successful, challenges remain. Some released deer, habituated to humans, return to the center for food. This highlights the delicate balance between conservation efforts and tourism. Despite these challenges, the center remains a popular destination and a symbol of Armenia's commitment to preserving its natural heritage.
