Goshavank Monastery: A Medieval Armenian Masterpiece

Goshavank Monastery, meaning "Monastery of Gosh," is a remarkable example of medieval Armenian architecture and a significant historical site. Located in the village of Gosh in the Tavush Province, about 75 kilometers northeast of Yerevan, it was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. The monastery was erected on the site of an older monastery, Nor Getik, which had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1188. The monastery was founded by Mkhitar Gosh, a renowned Armenian scholar, theologian, and jurist. Gosh played a key role in the rebuilding efforts and established a school that became a prominent center for education and culture. The complex was later renamed Goshavank in his honor. Goshavank comprises several religious and secular buildings, showcasing the architectural style of the time. Key structures include the Saint Astvatsatsin Church, the main church built in 1191-1196, the Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator (Surb Grigor Lusavorich), and the Church of St. Gevorg. The complex also features a scriptorium-belfry, chapels, and the mausoleum of Mkhitar Gosh. One of the highlights of Goshavank is the intricately carved khachkar created by master Poghos in 1291, considered one of the finest examples of Armenian cross-stone art. Today, Goshavank is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its historical significance, architectural beauty, and serene setting. Although no longer a functioning religious complex, it offers a glimpse into Armenia's rich past and the legacy of Mkhitar Gosh.
