Dilijan Amphitheatre: A Modern Ode to Ancient Theatrical Traditions

Nestled in the heart of Dilijan, Armenia, at 48 Myasnikyan St, the Dilijan Amphitheatre is a modern landmark that celebrates the town's vibrant cultural past. Dilijan, often called "Armenian Switzerland" for its picturesque landscapes and lush forests, provides a stunning backdrop for this unique venue. Built in 2009, the amphitheater is a tribute to Dilijan's theatrical heritage, which dates back to the 19th century when the town was home to the Rotonda, an open-air amphitheater. The Rotonda was a bustling cultural hub that hosted performances by famous Armenian and foreign actors. Although the original open-air theater was closed in 1948, its legacy lives on through the new Amphitheatre. The Dilijan Amphitheatre, designed in the Greek style, often leads visitors to believe it is an ancient structure. The ensemble includes the amphitheater itself, a sculpture of a girl holding a jar, and a classical arch with columns. The statue is called "Vardavar" in honor of the Armenian holiday.
