Discover more about Kobayr Monastery Complex

The Kobayr Monastery Complex, located near the village of Kober in the Lori region, stands as a remarkable testament to medieval Armenian history and religious architecture. Founded in 1171 by Princess Mariam, daughter of King Kyurike II of the Kingdom of Lori, the monastery's history is intertwined with prominent dynasties such as the Kyurikids, Bagratunis, and Zakarians. Kobayr's name, believed to be derived from the Georgian word 'kob' and the Armenian 'ayr,' both meaning 'cave,' reflects the numerous caverns surrounding the site. The complex served as a significant spiritual, cultural, and literary center in Northern Armenia during the Middle Ages. In the 13th century, the Zakarian noble family converted it into a Chalcedonian monastery, leading to the presence of Georgian inscriptions alongside the original Armenian ones. The monastery features several structures, including the Katoghike Church (the main church), the Mariamashen Church, chapels, a bell tower-tomb, and a refectory. The complex is renowned for its well-preserved frescoes, showcasing a blend of Armenian, Byzantine, and Georgian painting traditions. These frescoes, adorning the walls of the churches, depict religious scenes, saints, and members of the Zakarian family. Today, Kobayr Monastery is accessible by foot from Kober village. The site offers breathtaking views of the Debed Canyon and provides opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding natural beauty. Despite being partially ruined, the monastery's ongoing restoration efforts aim to preserve its historical and artistic significance for future generations.
