Discover more about Shaki Waterfall

Shaki Waterfall, located 3 km northwest of Sisian in the Syunik region, is one of Armenia's most captivating natural landmarks. The waterfall is formed by the Shaki River, a tributary of the Vorotan, as it plunges into a deep gorge. The powerful cascade of water creates a mesmerizing spectacle, with the sound of the falls echoing through the surrounding landscape. Local legends give the waterfall its name. One tells of a beautiful girl named Shaki who, to avoid capture by invaders, threw herself from a cliff, her dress transforming into the waterfall. Another legend recounts a tale of young Armenian women who escaped slavery by disappearing into the Vorotan River, with Shaki being miraculously saved by a rock that rose from the water, forming the waterfall. The area surrounding Shaki Waterfall is not only visually stunning but also rich in history. Archaeological excavations have revealed traces of human activity dating back to the Stone Age, with ancient grottoes and rock niches dotting the landscape. The falls are most impressive during the warmer months. Although a portion of the river's water is diverted to a nearby hydroelectric plant, Shaki Waterfall remains a powerful and beautiful sight.
