Getting There

  • Taxi

    From Goris, taxis are readily available and offer a direct route to Khndzoresk, approximately a 15-minute drive. A typical fare costs around 1,500-2,500 AMD. The taxi will drop you off near the entrance of the village, from where you can walk to the swinging bridge and cave dwellings.

  • Public Transport

    From Goris, you can take a local mini-bus (marshrutka) towards Khndzoresk, though availability may be limited. The mini-bus will drop you off in New Khndzoresk, from where you can walk towards the old village and the swinging bridge. The mini-bus fare is approximately 200-300 AMD. Be prepared for a 15-20 minute walk from the drop-off point to the main attractions.

  • Walking

    If you are already in New Khndzoresk, follow the main road towards the old village. The walk to the swinging bridge takes about 15-20 minutes and involves a descent into the gorge. The path is well-maintained but can be steep in some sections. There are no entrance fees to access the village or cross the bridge.

These caves were inhabited until the 1950s, offering a unique glimpse into the past.Khndzoresk's history dates back to the Middle Ages, playing a significant role in the region's cultural and historical landscape. In the 18th century, it served as a stronghold in the liberation movement led by David Bek. The village's fortress was a military base for Mkhitar Sparapet, a national hero. The village was once one of the largest in Eastern Armenia. By the end of the 19th century, it had a population of over 4,000, which nearly doubled by the early 20th century.The highlight of Khndzoresk is the 160-meter-long swinging bridge, which connects the two sides of the village. Suspended 63 meters above the ground, the bridge offers breathtaking views of the gorge and surrounding mountains. Crossing the bridge is an adventure, especially for those with a fear of heights.After crossing the bridge, visitors can explore the ancient cave homes, churches, and the "Nine Children" fountain, each with its own story. The St. Hripsime Church, located near the caves, is a centuries-old church still in use today. For those seeking adventure, the area offers several hiking trails with stunning views.
