Getting There

  • Taxi

    From the center of Alaverdi, a taxi ride to Mendz Er Cave is the most convenient option. Taxis are readily available. The ride takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Expect to pay around 1000-1500 AMD for the trip.

  • Public Transport

    From Alaverdi's central station, take marshrutka #3 towards Sanahin. Get off near the Sanahin suburb and follow the signs to Mendz Er Cave. From the marshrutka stop, it's approximately a 20-minute walk uphill to the cave entrance. The marshrutka fare is 100 AMD.

  • Walking

    For those who enjoy a scenic walk, it's possible to walk from Alaverdi to Mendz Er Cave. Head north on Tigran Mets Street, turn left onto Sarahart Street, and continue for about 15-20 minutes. Look for signs leading to the cave and follow the path uphill to the entrance. Be prepared for a moderately steep incline.

This multi-purpose destination, whose name translates to 'Big Cave', is perched above Alaverdi, providing stunning views of the surrounding Debed Canyon. The cave has a rich history, potentially serving as a habitat for early humans and later as a hiding place before becoming a goat pen. Today, it functions as an ethnography museum, showcasing national crafts, rituals, and household items from the Lori region's past. Life-size mannequins in traditional garments depict various periods and customary professions of the region. One corner features a maquette of the 200-year-old metallurgical Alaverdi forge. Beyond its historical exhibits, Mendz Er Cave also features a restaurant serving traditional Armenian cuisine. Visitors can savor local dishes while enjoying the cave's cool, earthy ambiance and breathtaking views. The complex also includes a master school and a contact zoo, making it a destination with something for everyone. The cave itself is rumored to extend for over 300 meters, possibly reaching as far as the Sanahin Monastery. The surrounding area is rich in historical sites, including the monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, the Akhtala Monastery, and the Sanahin Bridge.
