Getting to and around Lori Highlands

How to get there

Lori Highlands is most commonly reached by road from Yerevan through the north of Armenia, with routes approaching the province via Vanadzor and continuing towards Alaverdi, Spitak, Stepanavan or Tashir. Alaverdi is the principal base for the Debed gorge and the monasteries of Haghpat, Sanahin and Akhtala, while Stepanavan serves the western highlands. Minibuses and shared taxis connect Yerevan and major Armenian towns with Lori settlements, although routes and departure times can change. The nearest significant rail connection is at Vanadzor, while Zvartnots International Airport near Yerevan is the country’s main air gateway; neither should be treated as being inside the highlands.

Transportation

A private car or driver is the most flexible way to link Lori’s dispersed monasteries, villages, forests and plateau settlements. Main roads connect Vanadzor, Alaverdi, Stepanavan and Tashir, but local roads may be narrow, uneven or affected by snow and rain. Public minibuses are useful for reaching larger towns but are less convenient for monastery-hopping and rural walks, and some sites require a final approach on foot. History of Lori Highlands

Volcanic Uplands and the Debed Landscape

The physical setting of Lori was shaped by volcanic activity and the erosion of elevated basaltic terrain, producing broad uplands, steep ravines and distinctive stone formations. The Debed and its tributaries cut through the northern mountains, creating a natural corridor between Armenia and the southern Caucasus. These geological conditions influenced settlement, agriculture and transport: fertile pockets supported cultivation and grazing, while the gorge provided routes through otherwise difficult terrain. Local buildings and monasteries were commonly constructed from nearby volcanic stone, giving many Lori settlements a visually consistent relationship with their surroundings.

Medieval Kingdoms and Monastic Culture

Lori became an important northern Armenian region during the medieval period, particularly under the Bagratuni kingdom and the Kiurikian branch that ruled the Kingdom of Tashir-Dzoraget.
