Discover more about Old Khot

Old Khot, or Hin Khot, is a captivating historical site nestled in the Syunik region of Armenia, often referred to as the "Armenian Machu Picchu" due to its stunning cliffside location and architectural similarities. The village is located on the left bank of the Vorotan River, approximately 1500 meters above sea level, surrounded by gardens and imposing cliffs. With a history stretching back to the 2nd century BC, Old Khot was initially inhabited by people dwelling in caves formed in the volcanic tuff. Over time, these cave dwellings were expanded with stone structures, creating the illusion of houses emerging directly from the cliffs. In the 11th century, it was mentioned as a tax-paying settlement under the Tatev Monastery. The village boasted landmarks such as Khotaget, a large garden, Khanapa, a castle, and Khoti Vank, a monastery dedicated to St. Astvatsatsin. Old Khot was also known as Zangezur, meaning "land of bells," because of its renowned bells. In the 12th century, another monastery, Mrgadzori Khach, was constructed by an Armenian woman who had escaped from a Persian harem, showcasing a blend of Armenian and Persian architectural styles. However, by the 1970s, Old Khot was abandoned as residents relocated to a new settlement to the north, now known as Khot, due to the lack of infrastructure in the old village. Today, Old Khot attracts visitors with its scenic views and historical significance. Explorers can wander through the ruins, marvel at the architecture, and witness the intersection of nature and history. The site features stone houses, churches, and caves, retaining its enchanting atmosphere.
