Princess Sofia of Syunik founded the monastery in 936 AD, envisioning it as a spiritual refuge and a 'jewel' for the region. The monastery was named in honor of Supan Gnduni, a martyr of the Armenian Church. The monastery's architecture features a cross-in-square design with a central dome and four apses, constructed from finely hewn basalt. Inside the church, you can find fragments of bas-reliefs depicting Christ and the Virgin Mary. The complex includes the Surb Astvatsatsin Church (Holy Mother of God), chapels, cells, and a refectory. The walls are adorned with khachkars and frescoes illustrating the early spread of Christianity in Armenia.
