Gndevank Canyon, near Gndevaz village in Armenia's Vayots Dzor region, is a captivating geological wonder marked by its steep cliffs and the historic Gndevank Monastery nestled within. Carved by the Arpa River, the canyon's basalt hexagon walls create a dramatic landscape. Gndevank Monastery, founded in 936 AD by Princess Sophia of Syunik, adds cultural significance to the canyon. Legend says that Princess Sophia built the monastery as a spiritual retreat, stating, "Vayots Dzor was a ring without a jewel, but I built this monastery as the jewel for the ring". The monastery served as a haven for monks and a center for preserving Armenian cultural heritage. The complex includes the Church of St. Stephen, a gavit (forecourt), living quarters, and chapels adorned with frescoes and khachkars (cross-stones). Visitors can explore the monastery's well-preserved architecture, admire the ancient frescoes, and hike the canyon trails. The canyon's unique rock formations and diverse flora and fauna offer a serene escape.
