Mayravank Monastery: A Medieval Armenian Sanctuary

Mayravank Monastery, whose name literally translates to “Mother Monastery,” is a historic site located near the village of Solak in the Kotayk Province of Armenia. The monastery's origins trace back to the 7th century when it was founded by Hovhan Mayravanetsi. Hovhan's opposition to Catholicos Ezr Parajnaketsi led to the monastery being temporarily renamed Mayragom (cowhouse) in an attempt to humiliate him.The Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) Church, dating back to the 11th-12th centuries, is the primary structure that remains today. Constructed from solid basalt, the church showcases traditional Armenian architectural elements, including a central dome and rectangular deposits on both sides of the tabernacle. The western entrance is adorned with half-columns, and the eastern facade features detailed triangular and double niches. Inside the church, a 1224 inscription is visible on the western wall.Remnants of fellowship buildings can be seen on the northern, western, and southern sides of the church, offering a glimpse into the monastery's past. A unique 12th-century khachkar (cross-stone) was discovered at the monastery in 2011, adding to its historical and artistic significance. The monastery is set in a tranquil landscape of rolling hills and greenery, providing a peaceful atmosphere for exploration and reflection.
