The monastery's commanding position on the edge of the precipitous Kasakh River gorge enhances its spiritual aura and provides breathtaking views.According to legend, Gregory the Illuminator founded a church on this site in the 4th century after seeing it from Mount Aragats and deciding to build a church there. He then gathered clergymen to teach them psalms, giving rise to the name Saghmosavank, which means "Monastery of Psalms". However, historical records only mention Saghmosavank at the end of the 12th century. The monastery complex, built by the princely Vachutyan family in the 13th century, includes the Church of Saint Zion, the Church of Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother), a gavit (a type of narthex), and a repository of manuscripts. The main church, Saint Zion, was constructed in 1215 by Prince Vache Vachutyan and designed by architect Momik. The church's interior is cruciform, while its exterior is rectangular. The gavit was built in the first quarter of the 13th century, and the Church of Saint Astvatsatsin was added in 1235 by Prince Kurd Vachutyan. The repository of manuscripts, built in 1255, is notable for its unique design and the intricate structure of its roof.Saghmosavank was not only a religious center but also a significant center for calligraphy and learning. The monastery housed a higher school from the 13th century onward and was home to a rich collection of manuscripts. Many prominent figures lived and worked here, and numerous manuscripts were written and copied within its walls. Although the monastery suffered damage during the 1988 earthquake, reconstruction efforts have restored its exquisite beauty and historical significance.
