The surrounding landscape is characterized by basalt lava flows, caves, and grottoes, adding to the area's unique geological charm.Local legend tells the tale of a beautiful woman named Shake who, to avoid capture by invaders, leaped from a cliff, her flowing dress transforming into the waterfall. Another version recounts how Shake and other young women, captured to be presented to an Arab leader, escaped and were miraculously saved when a rock rose from the river, concealing them behind the cascading water. These legends add a romantic and heroic element to the waterfall's allure.Archaeological excavations around Shaki Waterfall have revealed traces of human activity dating back to the Stone Age, indicating the area's long and rich history. Getting There
Public Transport
To reach Shaki Waterfall via public transport, take a marshrutka (shared minibus) from the Kilikia Bus Station in Yerevan to Sisian. The journey takes approximately 5 hours and costs between $8 and $17. From Sisian, take another marshrutka towards Shaki Waterfall; this ride typically costs around 500 AMD and takes 30-40 minutes. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Shaki Waterfall road, followed by a short 10-15 minute walk to the waterfall.
Taxi
A taxi directly from Yerevan to Shaki Waterfall takes approximately 2.5-3 hours and costs around 20,000 AMD ($40) each way. Alternatively, take a taxi from Sisian to the waterfall, which is a shorter and more affordable ride. Expect to pay a metered fare. There are no unavoidable tolls or parking fees.
Car
Driving to Shaki Waterfall from Yerevan takes about 2.75 hours via the M2 highway. From Sisian, head northwest on the M2, then follow the signs to Shaki Waterfall. Parking is available near the waterfall and is generally free. Be aware that the road leading to the waterfall is winding and narrow in sections.
