Discover more about Levon's Divine Underground

Levon's Divine Underground is a truly unique attraction located in the village of Arinj, a short distance from Yerevan. This incredible underground complex was single-handedly carved out of the rock by Levon Arakelyan, starting in 1985 and continuing for 23 years until his death in 2008. It all began when Levon's wife, Tosya, asked him to dig a cellar for storing potatoes. Inspired, Levon began carving into the earth, driven by a vision to create something far grander. Using only hand tools like a hammer and chisel, he worked tirelessly, sometimes up to 18 hours a day, to realize his dream. He claimed to receive divine assistance, giving him unnatural strength. The result is an astonishing labyrinth of interconnected hallways, staircases, and uniquely decorated rooms that extends 21 meters (70 feet) below ground and covers 300 square meters. The cave system includes spiral staircases, underground passages, and chambers adorned with sculptures and bas-reliefs, all created without any blueprints or engineering assistance. The temperature inside the cave remains a constant +10°C (50°F) throughout the year. After Levon's death, Tosya opened the underground world as a museum to honor her husband's dedication. Visitors can explore the caves and learn about the story behind their creation. Levon's tools, photographs, and other artifacts are displayed in a small museum within the house. Tosya, or other family members, often guide visitors, sharing stories and legends surrounding the creation. Visiting Levon's Divine Underground offers a unique cultural experience. However, those with claustrophobia may find the experience uncomfortable, and visitors should be prepared to climb up and down approximately 80 steps to reach the cave system.
