Getting There

  • Car

    From Dilijan, take the M4 highway east towards Ijevan. After approximately 18 km, look for the turn-off to Arakelots Monastery. Turn onto the unpaved road and drive uphill for about 3 km to reach the monastery. Be cautious as the road can be bumpy. Parking is available near the monastery. There are no tolls.

  • Public Transport

    From Dilijan's town center, take a minibus (marshrutka) towards Ijevan. Inform the driver that you wish to get off at the Arakelots Monastery turn-off. The fare is approximately 300 AMD. From the turn-off, walk uphill for about 3 km on the unpaved road to reach the monastery. Alternatively, hire a taxi from Dilijan for around 2000-3000 AMD for a one-way trip.

  • Hiking

    For a more adventurous route, hike from Dilijan to Arakelots Monastery. Start in the city center and follow the trail through the forested area. The trek is approximately 7 km and takes 2-3 hours. Wear appropriate hiking gear and carry water. The trail connects to the unpaved road leading to the monastery.

Nestled in the forests of the Tavush region, near the village of Kirants, Arakelots Monastery offers a glimpse into Armenia's medieval past. The monastic complex, dating back to the 13th century, comprises two churches, a narthex, a bell tower, and other structures, all enclosed by a fortified wall.The main church, built in the 13th century, showcases traditional Armenian architectural elements. Constructed from greenish stones, the church features a rectangular exterior and a cruciform interior, with a dome supported by four arches. Inside, remnants of old frescoes can still be seen. The narthex, known for its unique vaulted cover with a smoke hole, is another notable building within the complex.Throughout its history, Arakelots Monastery served as a significant religious and cultural center. It flourished during the medieval period, benefiting from its location on ancient trade routes. Although largely abandoned since the 17th century, the monastery continues to attract visitors with its historical charm and serene atmosphere. Today, Arakelots Monastery faces threats from encroaching vegetation, structural decay and climate-related hazards.
