Saghmosavank Monastery, meaning "Monastery of Psalms", is a captivating 13th-century Armenian Apostolic complex located in the village of Saghmosavan, in the Aragatsotn Province. The monastery is strategically perched on the edge of the precipitous Kasakh River gorge, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Its location, about 37 km from Yerevan, makes it an easily accessible cultural and religious site.According to legend, Gregory the Illuminator founded the church in the 4th century. Historical records, however, only mention Saghmosavank at the end of the 12th century. The monastery complex includes the Church of Saint Sion, the Church of Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother), a courtyard, and a scriptorium (repository of manuscripts). The main church, Saint Sion, was built in 1215 by Prince Vache Vachutyan. The Church is a cross-domed structure with two-story vestries in each corner. The entrance is located on the western side, where the courtyard was constructed between 1215 and 1235. The Church of Saint Astvatsatsin was built in 1235 by Prince Kurd Vachutyan, Vache Vachutyan's son. It is a vaulted building with a rectangular base and an arched altar. In 1255, Prince Kurd Vachutyan and his wife built the scriptorium in memory of their deceased daughter. The scriptorium differs in construction from other such centers, featuring an altar in the east and a two-story sacristy. During the 13th century, the scriptorium housed 120 manuscripts, including interpretations of the Gospels and the Bible, theological literature, and works by Armenian historians. Saghmosavank was once one of the richest spiritual and cultural centers of medieval Armenia. The monastery's school operated until the end of the 17th century.Though the monastery suffered damage during the 1988 earthquake, reconstruction efforts have restored its exquisite beauty. Today, Saghmosavank stands as a testament to Armenia's rich architectural, historical, and cultural legacy.
