Mount Ara: A Volcanic Peak Steeped in Legend

Mount Ara, rising to 2,606 meters (8,549 feet), is a striking polygenetic stratovolcanic cone located in the Kotayk Province of Armenia. Situated between the Kasagh and Hrazdan rivers, it's roughly 40 km north of Yerevan, making it a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The mountain's distinctive shape, resembling a lying man, has fueled the legend that it is the resting place of King Ara the Beautiful. According to the tale, the Assyrian Queen Semiramis, enamored with Ara, waged war against Armenia to capture him. Ara was killed in battle on the mountain's slopes, and Semiramis, regretting his death, attempted to revive him with the help of mythical creatures. Mount Ara's slopes boast diverse ecosystems, ranging from semi-desert and steppe to lush meadows and forests. This variety supports a rich array of plant and animal life, including numerous bird species, reptiles, rodents, and larger mammals like bears, wolves, and foxes. The area is recognized as an Important Bird Area, attracting birdwatchers and nature lovers. For those seeking a moderate hike with rewarding panoramic views, Mount Ara offers several trails to the summit. The climb typically takes 4-6 hours, with an elevation gain of around 840 meters. Along the way, hikers can explore the Tsaghkevank Monastery (also known as the Virgin Varvara Monastery), a cave shrine with a sacred spring believed to have healing powers. The best time to hike Mount Ara is during spring and early summer or in the fall, when the weather is pleasant.
