Discover more about Saint Gregory The Illuminator Cathedral

Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral, also known as the Yerevan Cathedral, is a prominent landmark in Yerevan, Armenia, serving as the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Consecrated on September 23, 2001, it commemorates the 1700th anniversary of Armenia's adoption of Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD, a pivotal moment attributed to Saint Gregory the Illuminator. Armenia holds the distinction of being the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion. The cathedral complex, designed by architect Stepan Kurkchyan, harmoniously blends traditional Armenian architectural elements with modern aesthetics. Built from orange-colored tufa stones from Ani, the complex consists of three churches: the main Cathedral, accommodating 1,700 seats, and the Chapels of Saint Tiridates the King and Saint Ashkhen the Queen, each with 150 seats. King Tiridates III and Queen Ashkhen were crucial figures who aided St. Gregory in converting Armenia to Christianity. The belfry tower, featuring over 30 arches, and a courtyard are located at the cathedral's entrance. The cathedral also houses relics of Saint Gregory the Illuminator. Located in the Kentron District, the cathedral is near the General Andranik metro station and is visible from many parts of Yerevan. The grounds feature walking paths and gardens, offering a peaceful retreat from the city.
