    Discover more about Sevanavank Monastery

Sevanavank Monastery, located on the peninsula of Lake Sevan, is one of Armenia's most recognizable landmarks. Founded in 305 AD by Gregory the Illuminator, the monastery's history is intertwined with legends and historical events. In 874, Princess Mariam ordered the construction of the churches of Surb Arakelots (Holy Apostles) and Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God). Originally built on an island, the monastery's strategic location made it a stronghold. Over time, the water level of Lake Sevan dropped, transforming the island into a peninsula. Today, visitors can explore the two remaining 9th-century churches built with black tuff stone, showcasing intricate masonry. Inside the main church, a unique khachkar depicts Jesus Christ with Mongol features, reflecting the artistic styles of the 12th and 13th centuries. Sevanavank Monastery has withstood invasions and served as a spiritual center throughout its history. The monastery also housed the first Armenian Matenadaran, a repository of precious manuscripts. The site offers panoramic views of Lake Sevan and the surrounding mountains, making it a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims alike.
