Ardvi Monastery: A Sanctuary of History and Serenity

Ardvi Monastery, or St. Hovhannes Monastery, is located in the elevated village of Ardvi in the Lori region and stands as a testament to Armenia's rich religious and architectural history. The monastery's origins trace back to the 8th century, with expansions and renovations continuing through the 17th century. The complex comprises two single-nave vaulted churches connected by a longitudinal wall, a belfry, monastic buildings, and a surrounding low-rise enclosure. The monastery achieved recognition in honor of Catholicos Hovhannes Odznetsi (717-728), a prominent theologian, lawyer, thinker, and reformer who was later canonized as St. Hovhannes Imastaser (Wise). He constructed a hermitage in the northwestern edge of the village, which became the St. Hovhannes Monastery. Visitors can explore the grounds, admiring the tetrahedral monument, khachkars (cross-stones), and the ruins of dwellings. The tomb of Catholicos St. Hovhannes Odznetsi silently oversees the complex from the frontstage of the Northern Church. Ardvi Monastery offers a serene environment, enhanced by the surrounding nature. Its remote location provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life, making it an ideal spot for meditation or simply enjoying the quiet. The monastery is also known for being a filming location for Sergei Parajanov's renowned movie 'The Color of Pomegranates'.
