Khosrov Forest State Reserve, nestled in the Ararat Province of Armenia, is one of the oldest protected areas in the world, with a history stretching back over 1,700 years. Founded between 334 and 338 by King Khosrov Kotak of the Arshakuni dynasty, the reserve was initially created to improve the climate around the city of Artashat and to conserve the region's flora and fauna. It also served as a royal hunting ground, a place for military exercises, and a source of entertainment for the Armenian kings. Today, the reserve spans approximately 23,213.5 hectares, with elevations ranging from 700 to 2,800 meters above sea level. It protects a diverse range of ecosystems, including juniper and oak forests dating back to the Tertiary Period, semi-desert landscapes, and Mediterranean relict plant ecosystems. The reserve is home to over 1,800 plant species, representing more than 50% of Armenia's flora, and a rich variety of animal life, including many rare and endangered species. Among the notable fauna are the Transcaucasian brown bear, the bezoar goat, the Caucasian leopard, and various bird species. Khosrov Forest State Reserve is not only a natural haven but also a repository of Armenian history and culture. Scattered throughout the reserve are over 300 registered monuments, including monasteries, churches, chapels, settlements, and khachkars (carved cross-stones). Among these are the Havuts Tar Monastery, the Aghjots Monastery complex, and the Kakavaberd Fortress. Visitors can explore these historical sites while enjoying the reserve's scenic hiking trails, which offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
