Discover more about Kecharis Monastery

Kecharis Monastery, located in the popular resort town of Tsaghkadzor, is a captivating journey into Armenia's rich medieval past. Founded in the 11th century by the Pahlavuni dynasty, the monastery evolved into a major religious and cultural center, even housing its own school. The complex is set on the slope of the Pambak Ridge. The monastery consists of four churches: St. Gregory the Illuminator, St. Nshan, Katoghike, and St. Harutyun (Holy Resurrection), along with two chapels and a cemetery dotted with khachkars. St. Gregory the Illuminator Church, built in 1003, is the oldest structure and a classic example of Armenian architecture with its domed hall. The Church of Surb Nshan, constructed in the 11th century, showcases a cross-in-square design. Katoghike Church, built in the 13th century, features a cross-shaped facade and a high dome. St. Harutyun Church, built in 1220, is a small, rectangular domed-hall church. Throughout its history, Kecharis Monastery has faced destruction and restoration. It was heavily damaged during the Mongol invasions in the 13th century but was later restored. In the 20th century, an earthquake in 1927 caused significant damage, requiring further restoration efforts. Today, the monastery has been fully restored and is a prominent landmark in Tsaghkadzor.
