Smbataberd Fortress, also known as the Fortress of Smbat, is a majestic medieval stronghold located between the villages of Artabuynk and Yeghegis in the Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia. The fortress is one of the largest in the Syunik region and stands as a testament to the architectural and strategic prowess of ancient Armenian builders.Historians believe that Smbataberd may have existed as early as the 5th century, with significant fortifications added in the 10th century. Some connect its construction and name to Prince Smbat of Syunik, who lived in the 10th century. Others suggest it was named after Smbat Orbelyan, a 13th-century prince. The fortress served as the primary military bastion for the fortified town of Yeghegis and the surrounding areas.Smbataberd's location on a narrow, rocky ridge made it exceptionally defensible. Deep gorges surround it on three sides, and the walls, constructed from large basalt stones, are reinforced with semicircular towers. The fortress is divided by a wall into northern and southern sections, each with its own acropolis. Remnants of barracks and cisterns have been found within both sections. An ingenious underground clay pipe system supplied water from nearby springs.Today, Smbataberd is a historical monument that attracts tourists, hikers, and history enthusiasts.
