    Discover more about Tanahat Monastery

Tanahat Monastery, also known as Karmir Monastery or the Red Monastery, is a significant religious and historical site in Armenia's Vayots Dzor Province. Founded in the 8th century, possibly on the site of a pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Anahit, it stands as a testament to Armenia's rich cultural heritage. The monastery derives its name from the reddish stones used in its construction, which create a stunning visual effect, especially at sunset. The monastery complex features the 13th-century churches of Surb Stepanos (St. Stephen) and Surb Nshan (Holy Sign), both built with polished basalt stone. Surb Stepanos, the main church, showcases a cruciform interior and a slender, 12-facet drum with a tent-roof spire. The southern wall features the Proshian emblem, an eagle clutching a lamb. Surb Nshan is adorned with a bas-relief carving above the entry, depicting a hunting scene. Tanahat Monastery may have been the location of Gladzor University, a prominent educational institution in medieval Armenia. Founded around 1280, the university thrived until the 1340s, attracting scholars and artists. The site also contains remnants of medieval fortifications, khachkars (cross-stones), and tombstones. The monastery's well-preserved state, intricate carvings, and beautiful natural surroundings make it a captivating destination for history buffs and travelers seeking spiritual reflection.
