Vorotnavank Monastery, also known as Vaghatin Monastery, is a significant cultural and religious center located in Armenia's Syunik Province. Perched on a high plateau overlooking the Vorotan Gorge, about 14 km east of Sisian, the monastery offers breathtaking views and a peaceful escape.Founded in 1000 AD by Queen Shahandukht of Syunik, the complex comprises several structures, including the churches of St. Stepanos (built in 1000 AD) and St. Karapet (built in 1007 AD). The monastery's name is derived from the nearby Vorotan River, known for its roaring flow. The site has a rich history, with legends claiming that St. Gregory the Illuminator established a sanctuary here in the 3rd century.Throughout its history, Vorotnavank served as a vital spiritual, educational, and defensive center. The complex was fortified with high stone walls, housing workshops, storage rooms, a seminary, a cemetery, and an almshouse. A pillar in the courtyard symbolized the ordination of monks and the inauguration of kings. The monastery was also known as a pilgrimage site, believed to have the power to heal snakebites.Vorotnavank has faced numerous challenges, including invasions by Seljuks, Mongol-Tatars, and Lenk Temur, as well as a devastating earthquake in 1931. The earthquake caused significant damage, including the collapse of the dome of St. Karapet Church. However, reconstruction efforts began in the late 20th century, and the monastery has been partially restored, preserving its historical authenticity and cultural continuity. Today, visitors can explore the restored churches, admire the intricate stonework, and enjoy the stunning views of the Vorotan Valley.
