Angels' Canyon: A Geological Wonder in Vedi

Angels' Canyon, a hidden gem in Armenia's Ararat region, presents a landscape sculpted by time and the elements. Situated near the town of Vedi, about 55 km south of Yerevan, this canyon has become increasingly popular for its distinctive beauty. The canyon's Armenian name, Hreshtakneri Dzor, adds to its allure. The canyon itself is relatively small, stretching approximately 50 meters in length and rising 6-7 meters high. Its slopes feature vertical cliffs of yellow sandstone, arranged in horizontal layers that tell a story of geological formation dating back 60 million years. The now-vanished Kotuts River played a crucial role in carving this natural wonder. Visitors to Angels' Canyon are greeted by a semi-desert environment, characterized by rocky gorges and minimal vegetation. The canyon's floor is covered with river sand and stones, polished by the ancient river. En route to the canyon, you can find the Arch of Angels, a natural sandstone arch, and the Stone Book, a cliff resembling an open book. The area is also near the Khosrov State Reserve and the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge, increasing the chances of spotting local wildlife such as snakes, tortoises, and eagles. The HIKEArmenia loop trail provides an opportunity to explore the broader region, with the canyon offering a rewarding destination after a moderate hike. The trail is marked but can be wild, requiring hikers to follow the riverbed or animal paths in certain sections.
