Kecharis Monastery, located in Tsaghkadzor, Armenia, is a captivating monastic complex dating back to the 11th to 13th centuries. Founded by the Pahlavuni princes, it evolved into a major religious and educational center in medieval Armenia. The monastery is situated on the northwestern edge of Tsaghkadzor, along the slope of the Pambak Ridge. The complex comprises four churches: St. Gregory the Illuminator, St. Nshan, Katoghike, and St. Harutyun (Holy Resurrection), along with two chapels and a medieval cemetery dotted with khachkars. St. Gregory the Illuminator Church, built in 1033, features a vaulted hall topped with a broad dome. Its gavit, or entrance hall, was added in the late 12th century. The Church of Surb Nshan, constructed in the 11th century and restored in 1223, showcases a cross-in-square design. Katoghike Church, commissioned between 1203 and 1214, also follows a cross-in-square layout and includes two-story chapels in each corner. The Church of the Holy Resurrection, built in 1220, is a modest structure with a rectangular base and a tall central dome. Throughout the Kecharis complex, visitors can admire unique medieval khachkars and tombstones. The monastery suffered damage from earthquakes and invasions but was restored in the 20th century. Today, Kecharis Monastery stands as a testament to Armenia's rich architectural and religious traditions, offering a glimpse into the country's medieval past.
