Discover more about Republic Square

Republic Square, locally known as Hraparak, serves as the vibrant heart of Yerevan and a striking symbol of Armenia's capital. Designed by architect Alexander Tamanian and initially constructed in 1926, the square embodies a blend of national style and global architectural excellence. For many years it was known as Lenin Square. The square is surrounded by five imposing structures, all built from Armenian rose and yellow tuff stones, creating a unified and elegant architectural statement. These include the Government House with its iconic clock tower, the National Gallery and History Museum of Armenia, the Central Post Office, the Armenia Marriott Hotel, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The highlight of Republic Square is undoubtedly the singing fountains. Renovated in 2007 by the French company Aquatique Show International, these fountains offer a spectacular show of water, light, and music every evening from late March/April to October. The performances, which start around 9 or 10 PM and last until 11 PM, feature a diverse repertoire ranging from classical masterpieces to contemporary pop and rock. The fountains are a major draw for both tourists and locals, creating a lively atmosphere in the evenings. In addition to the fountains, the square features a tranquil promenade with open-air cafes and a small artificial pool adorned with 2,750 tiny fountains, symbolizing Yerevan's ancient age. Republic Square is not only a visual delight but also a focal point for significant state concerts and celebrations, drawing crowds from across Armenia.
