Discover more about Hooiberg Hiking Trail

Hooiberg stands as one of Aruba's most recognizable natural landmarks. Rising 541 feet (165 meters) above sea level, this volcanic formation offers a unique hiking experience with rewarding panoramic views. The name 'Hooiberg' translates to 'haystack' in Dutch, inspired by its distinctive shape. While not the highest point on Aruba (that title belongs to Jamanota hill in Arikok National Park), Hooiberg's central location and accessibility make it a favorite among locals and tourists. The well-maintained staircase, built in 1951 and renovated in 1991, consists of approximately 587 concrete steps. Along the way, there's a gazebo about halfway up, providing a shaded resting spot. The hike is considered moderate, taking most people about 20-30 minutes to reach the top. From the summit, enjoy 360-degree views of Aruba's coastline, the Caribbean Sea, and, on clear days, even the coast of Venezuela. Hooiberg is more than just a scenic spot; it's a symbol of Aruba, depicted on the Aruban Coat of Arms. The mountain is composed of a unique type of quartz diorite, named Hooibergiet after the landmark itself.
