Discover more about Spanish Lagoon

Spanish Lagoon, or Spaans Lagoen in Papiamento and Dutch, is a captivating coastal bay and wetland area located approximately 10 kilometers southeast of Oranjestad, Aruba. Designated as a Ramsar site in 1980, it gained further protection in February 2017 when it was included within the boundary of Arikok National Park. This unique ecosystem, formed during the last ice age, is the only inner bay on Aruba and one of the largest natural lagoons in the Caribbean. The lagoon stretches approximately 2 kilometers in length and ranges from 200 to 500 meters in width. Its shores are covered by dense mangroves, creating a vital feeding and breeding ground for a variety of bird species, reef fish, and crustaceans. Bird watchers can spot Aruba's iconic burrowing owl (Shoco), vibrant tropical birds like the troupial and bananaquit, and migratory species such as egrets and sandpipers. The lagoon's calm waters are also ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling, allowing visitors to explore its serene environment. Beyond its natural beauty, Spanish Lagoon is steeped in history. In the 15th century, Spanish settlers used the bay as their main entry point to Aruba. The area also features ancient Amerindian shell middens and the ruins of the Balashi Gold Smelter, offering a glimpse into Aruba's past. Frenchman's Pass, a narrow passage near Spanish Lagoon, is said to be the site of a 17th-century battle between French pirates and local Indians. Today, Spanish Lagoon provides a tranquil escape from the more commercialized areas of Aruba, inviting visitors to connect with nature and appreciate the island's rich heritage.
