Alto Vista Chapel: A Spiritual Beacon in Aruba

Discover Aruba's spiritual heritage at the Alto Vista Chapel, a peaceful hilltop sanctuary with stunning views and a serene labyrinth.

4.6

Perched atop a hill overlooking Aruba's rugged northern coast, the Alto Vista Chapel is a significant historical and spiritual landmark. Built in 1750 by a Spanish missionary and Caquetio natives, it was the first Catholic church on the island. The original structure, made of stone walls and a straw roof, served as a center of worship and a beacon of hope. After being abandoned and falling into ruin in the 19th century, the chapel was rebuilt in 1952. Today, the bright yellow chapel with its terracotta tiled roof stands out against the Aruban landscape, offering a tranquil and picturesque setting for visitors. The chapel's simple yet elegant design harmonizes with the natural beauty of the island, creating a serene atmosphere for reflection and contemplation. The Alto Vista Chapel welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds. Visitors can explore the chapel's modest interior, adorned with religious statues and polished wooden pews. Outside, a peaceful labyrinth provides an opportunity for meditation and inner peace. The chapel also offers stunning panoramic views of the coastline and the Caribbean Sea, making it a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers. The chapel holds a special place in the hearts of Arubans, who come to celebrate religious events and seek spiritual guidance. The annual pilgrimage on January 18th, the Feast of Santa Filomena, attracts many devotees who participate in religious ceremonies. Additionally, a weekly mass is held on Tuesdays at 5:30 PM in Papiamento.
