These animals, once vital to Aruba's transportation, faced near extinction in the 1970s due to disease and changing times.Today, the sanctuary provides food, shelter, and medical care to these gentle creatures, each of whom is given a name and individual attention. Visitors can freely roam the grounds, interact with the donkeys, and learn about their history and importance to Aruban culture. The donkeys are known to be affectionate and enjoy being petted and fed, especially with apples and carrots which visitors are welcome to bring.The sanctuary also features a visitor center, a gift shop with donkey-themed souvenirs, and a covered porch where guests can relax and enjoy refreshments. Proceeds from the gift shop and donations directly support the sanctuary's mission. For a more personal experience, visitors can donate to cuddle and hug a donkey. The sanctuary operates daily with the exception of New Year's Day.
