Protestantse Gemeente van Aruba: A Historic Church

The Protestantse Gemeente van Aruba, situated on Wilhelminastraat 1 in Oranjestad, holds a special place in Aruba's history and culture. Constructed in 1846, it is the oldest church building on the island, embodying a blend of Dutch colonial architecture and Caribbean influences. Originally, the site was the home of the Arends family. In 1844, the property was acquired by the Protestant community, which had been established in 1822. The Arends' residence served as both a home and a place of worship until it was demolished in 1845 to make way for the new church. The stones from the original house were used in the church's construction. The church has undergone several renovations and restorations since the 1880s, with significant work in the 1980s and 1990s to restore it to its 19th-century appearance. High-quality furniture, roof tiles, chandeliers, and wooden artifacts were brought in from the Netherlands. Today, the Protestantse Gemeente van Aruba is not only a place of worship but also a historical monument.
