Tres Trapi: Aruba's Turtle Snorkeling Paradise
Discover Aruba's underwater wonders at Tres Trapi, a prime snorkeling spot famous for its sea turtle encounters and crystal-clear waters.
Tres Trapi, named for the three rudimentary steps carved into the coastal rock, is a unique snorkeling spot on Aruba's northwestern coast. This isn't your typical sandy beach; instead, it's a rocky cove where the main attraction lies beneath the crystal-clear waters. Tres Trapi offers some of the best snorkeling in Aruba, particularly for those hoping to encounter sea turtles in their natural habitat. The cove itself is small, with limited space for spreading out on the sand. The shoreline is rocky, so water shoes are recommended for comfortable entry. Access to the water is via the namesake steps, which can be slippery. Once in the water, snorkelers are treated to a vibrant underwater world. The water is shallow near the shore, gradually deepening to around 10-15 feet. The main draw of Tres Trapi is the abundance of marine life, especially sea turtles. Snorkelers can spot these graceful creatures feeding on seagrass, often just beyond the buoy markers. Besides turtles, the area is home to a variety of colorful fish and cushion sea stars. For a more challenging swim, strong swimmers can venture towards the Antilla shipwreck, located about 0.4 miles offshore, though a tour is recommended. Tres Trapi is a public beach and is free to visit. There are limited amenities; only parking and some shade are available. Visitors should bring their own snorkeling gear, water shoes, and refreshments. The beach can get crowded, especially during peak hours when tour groups arrive. To avoid the crowds and increase your chances of seeing turtles, it's best to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
