    Discover more about Hindmarsh Bridge

Hindmarsh Bridge, located in Adelaide, South Australia, is more than just a functional structure; it's a landmark that tells a story of the city's development and engineering progress. Situated on Port Road, the bridge facilitates passage over the River Torrens, linking Adelaide to its port.Originally, Hindmarsh was the first township established outside the City of Adelaide. The need for a reliable river crossing grew with the development of nearby townships and industries. The first bridge, constructed in 1844 by William Wilkins, was a simple but robust timber structure that frequently remained standing when floods damaged other bridges. This was replaced in 1848 by a more conventional timber bridge designed by Colonial Engineer Edward Frome. In 1880, an iron girder bridge was erected, also carrying a horse tram service. The current bridge, completed in 1996 with a tramway added in 2010, reflects modern engineering. It consists of two identical sections with a central gap spanned by precast concrete slabs. The bridge is made of a reinforced concrete road deck on steel girders supported by concrete abutments and piles.Over the years, the Hindmarsh Bridge has been known by various names, including Thebarton Bridge and Wilkins Bridge. Today, it stands as a testament to the evolving construction techniques and materials used in bridge building, marking a significant piece of Adelaide's history.
