Discover more about State Library of South Australia

The State Library of South Australia stands as a pillar of knowledge and history on Adelaide's North Terrace, often called the city's 'cultural boulevard'. Established well before South Australia was officially a colony, its origins trace back to the South Australian Literary Association in London in 1834. The association aimed to cultivate and share useful knowledge in the new colony. The library's collection has grown to over 4 million items, including rare books, maps, manuscripts, and ephemera. The 'South Australiana' collection meticulously documents the state's history from pre-European settlement to the present day. The library also houses general reference materials in various formats, including digital, film, sound, video, photographs, and microfiche. The library comprises several buildings, each with its unique architectural style. The historic Institute Building, opened in 1861, the Mortlock Wing, opened in 1884, and the modern Spence Wing, which opened in 2003, replacing the 1960s Bastyan Wing. The Mortlock Wing, with its French Renaissance style and ornate interiors, is a highlight. The State Library provides various services, including free public computers, Wi-Fi, printing, and copying. Visitors can explore permanent exhibitions, such as the Story Wall and Treasures Wall, and access a wide range of resources, from international newspapers to travel guides. The library also hosts events and exhibitions, making it a dynamic cultural hub. The Library is open to the public and entry is free.
