Palmer Gardens: A Victorian Oasis in North Adelaide

Palmer Gardens, also known as Pangki Pangki (Park 28), is a captivating park located in North Adelaide, South Australia. This triangular green space, bounded by Palmer Place, offers a serene escape from the city bustle. The park's design and atmosphere reflect a strong Victorian character, enhanced by surrounding historic buildings and residences. Originally part of Colonel William Light's 1837 plan for Adelaide, the gardens retain their original shape. For a time, the area was known as 'Reserves 30 and 31' before officially becoming Palmer Gardens in 1907. The park's name honors Colonel George Palmer, a South Australian Colonisation Commissioner. However, 'Pangki Pangki' is a nod to a local Kaurna tracker and guide, recognizing the area's Aboriginal heritage. Throughout its history, Palmer Gardens has undergone several transformations. Early on, the land was used for grazing and firewood collection. Later, in the 1870s, efforts began to transform it into a more formal garden. Today, visitors can enjoy wide pathways, rose garden beds, and mature trees like Sugar Gums. The park also features Victorian-era cast-iron bollards, likely added in the 1920s.
