Discover more about Luhrs Cottage

Step back in time at Luhrs Cottage, a beautifully preserved example of early Barossa life, located in the serene village of Light Pass. Built circa 1846 from pug and straw by Johann Heinrich Luhrs, the cottage served as home to his wife Rosina and their five children. Luhrs, a devout Lutheran who arrived from Germany in 1843, was the first school teacher in Light Pass and played a key role in establishing the local Immanuel Church. The four-room cottage is filled with items that tell the story of the early Barossa settlers. The bedrooms feature displays of early German clothing and children's toys, while the front room showcases Luhrs family photos, homeopathic items, and religious paintings. The kitchen contains an array of period kitchenware, with a small fireplace used for daily cooking and heating water. Out the back, you'll find the 'Schoolroom', which was actually a kitchen built around 1870. This room features a large bake oven and now houses a collection of early German teaching materials, exercise books, and certificates. Below the kitchen is a cellar that was used to store preserves, meat, butter and other perishable foods. Don't miss the 'outhouse' and smokehouse, used for smoking meat and German sausages. The yard displays machinery used by early vignerons, including an original German wagon and locally made hand tools. Luhrs Cottage operates as a museum, open daily from 9 am to 4 pm. Entry is by gold coin donation, which supports the preservation of this important historical site. The cottage is a gathering point for preserving its own history and the history of the Light Pass community.
